A Graveside Service for Lt. Col Harry G. Perkins, Jr., of Atlanta, will be held Wednesday October 7, 2015 at 1:00PM at Georgia National Cemetery 2025 Mt. Carmel Church Rd. Canton, GA 30114. Lt. Col. Perkins, Jr. served on all levels of Government, various departments with City, State and Federal levels.  

Harry graduated from Marist High School in Atlanta then went to play football at UGA under Coach Butts until he had a knee injury and then transferred to Alabama Polly Tech University (now known as Auburn University).  Upon graduation he received a commission in the U.S. Air Force and spent the next 8 years working in Supply Logistics on Active Duty & another 20 years in the USAF reserves.  Upon leaving Active Duty, he earned his Master's Degree in Public Administration from UGA and while serving his Country in USAF Reserves he received a Master's Degree in Government Logistics & Budget from the United States War College & a PhD for "National Security & Resource Strategy" from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (now "The Eisenhower School of the National Defense University").

His civilian career included governmental appointments that included the Assistant Director of GDMV and the first Director of the Georgia Automobile Title Division; City Manager of Tifton, GA; City Manager of Gulfport, FL.; the First County Manager of the consolidated Augusta-Richmond County, GA which also included being the Military Commander for Land & Grounds  of Fort Gordon; First County Administrator of the consolidated city-county government of Fayetteville-Cumberland County, N.C. which also included being the Commander for Land & Grounds at Ft. Bragg & Pope AFB, N.C. and held a continuous management position with FEMA for 24 years.

After retirement, he served 16 years of service with the Internal Revenue as a seasonal employee and volunteered at Fern bank Museum of National History for 17 years. In 1982 was classified by the International County Municipal Association as the Country's foremost expert in Governmental Consolidation & Budgeting having combined Augusta-Richmond County & Fayetteville-Cumberland County, N.C. During his Tenure in government, he held position of National Science Foundation Advisory Board, Advisory Board with UGA, Georgia State, Augusta Medical College and various Hospital Board Trustees. Spent over 50 years as a Mason & Shriner.

He is survived by his wife Sue of 47 years, his children: Donna, Harry, Ashley, Stephen, and his Grandchildren: Billy, Brandy, Catharine, Nicholas, Cody, Jayda, Amber, Hannah, Aydian and Austin. Please deliver flowers to our Chapel before the date of service.
