John Louis Powell Jr. was born on May 28, 1954 in Davisboro, Georgia to the late John Louis Powell, Sr. andWillie Mae Powell. He was preceded in death by his wife Nazarene Powell .son Ricardo Stephens, brothers Clinton Bryant, Billy Powell, father John Lewis Powell Sr., and sister Ruby Wilson.
John came to know the Lord for himself and joined Morning Star Baptist Church at an early age. He later joined Bethlehem Church of God Holiness with his wife, Nazarene Powell, and remained faithful in his Christian journey.
John attended Samuel Howard Archer High School where he was an All-American football player. He matriculated to Albany State College and thereafter served in the United States Army, stationed in Korea. Upon his completion of duties, he attended Brown Barber School in Atlanta, Georgia, where he earned his beautician license and pursued a passion as a Master Barber for over forty years. John also worked at Fort Gillem in the Engineering Department andretired in 2008 after serving 28 years. In John’s spare time, he served others by cutting their grass and providing carpentry and handy work.
John had a passion for singing, playing multiple instruments, being an artist, fishing and painting. He played in the legendary Ounce Band for years. He also enjoyed mentoring and coaching the little league football team.
John left many to cherish wonderful memories of him: his dear mother Willie Mae Powell, a loving daughter Shanita Silas; his children by marriage, Eric Booker, Howard Booker, III (Dionne) and Veronica (Timothy) Chism;grandchildren, Ashley Silas, DeAndre Nelson, Veronica Davis and many beautiful grandchildren by marriage; a host of God-Children; Brothers, Jimmy (Lorene) Bryant, Kenneth (Faye) Powell, Michael Powell, and Cedric Powell; Sisters, Shirley (Frankie) Warren, Francine (Nathan) Jackson, Cynthia (Ivan) Stinson, Benita (Miguel) Hall and other wonderful God-Siblings; Sister-in-law, Angela Powell; Aunts, Charlie Maude Bryant, Annie B. Powell, Lizzie (EL) Brown, Mary Bryant, Bertha (Fred) Jeter, Ethel Bundrage, Virginia Ingram; Uncle, Wesley Melvin, Albert (Mary) Powell; A devoted friend, Clara Dotch, other special friendsand a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives & friends.
